The Muslim Safety Forum (MSF) update 10th August 2006
UK Airline Disruption/ Terror Plot

Overnight the police, with the full knowledge of Ministers, have carried out a major counter-terrorism operation, what they believe would have been a major threat to the UK and international Partners.

At 2am the Joint Terrorism Analysis raised UK terror alert from severe to Critical for the first time.

The police were acting with the MI5, they are investigating an 'alleged' plot to bring down 9 aircrafts mid-flight and would have resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives.

This has meant major disruptions at UK Airports, in particular Heathrow.

Currently there are 21 people in custody following overnight raids.

Most of the individuals detained are from London and some from the Thames Valley and Birmingham. Sources say the individuals are British born and have been under surveillance for several months as part of a covert operation.

"We are genuinely looking to the public to remain calm, patient and vigilant. But we cannot stress too highly the severity that this plot represented. Put simply this was intended to be mass murder on an unimaginable scale." Was said in a statement by Deputy Commissioner Paul Stephenson.

The MSF regularly meets with the police every month, however in this instance we were not informed about this operation even though DC Paul Stephenson in his statement said they had informed community leaders. The MSF is keen to learn who the police service did infact liaise with.

End.
